Covering an outdoor kitchen changes more than the amount of shade. It affects light, rainwater, the relationship to the house, and where cooking equipment can be installed. Choose the structure and the appliances together rather than adding a roof after the kitchen layout is fixed.
Separate shade from weather protection
An open pergola and a roofed pavilion do different jobs. Think about when you cook, the direction of afternoon sun, and what you expect to stay dry. Ask what the proposed structure can realistically protect in wind-driven rain.
Check the appliance installation requirements
A covered location can change the requirements for a grill or other cooking equipment. Have the installer check the selected manufacturer’s instructions, clearances, ventilation, and any applicable approvals. An attractive photograph is not an installation specification.
Plan where the roof water goes
The roof adds another surface collecting rainfall. Coordinate gutters or other drainage provisions with the patio and landscape. Check entrances and walking routes so a new covered area does not create a wet transition beside the house.
Consider light, views, and maintenance
Review the structure from inside the home as well as from the yard. Posts, roof depth, and materials can alter daylight and sightlines. United Poolscapes can plan a pavilion and kitchen together, including how the structure meets the hardscape and wider property.
